THE RESILIENT BRAIN-TRANSFORMING LIVES
Resilience-thriving in the face of adversity-was once thought to be a trait of a few invulnerable individuals. However, recent research shows that resilience is a universal,life-long capacity of our adaptive human brains. Further genes are not destiny since neuroplasticity builds fresh brain pathways for coping with challenges and healing trauma. Drawing from traditional Circle of Courage values described in Reclaiming Youth at Risk ( Brendtro, Brokenleg, & Van Bokern, 2002) and exciting new findings from neuroscience ( CF Learning, 2017 ), this presentation provides tools to meet six-brain-based needs that are essential for positive growth-both for young people and for adults in leadership and service roles.
The practical tools to meet six brain based needs that are essential for growth:
1- SAFETY -ensure physical, emotional, and cultural safety by replacing threat with trust. 2- BELONGING -connect with adult-wary youth and create positive family and peer group climates. 3- ACHIEVEMENT-promote intrinsic motivation to engage all learners and nurture intelligence. 4- POWER- develop self-regulation, prevent conflict cycles, and empower positive leadership. 5- PURPOSE– strengthen empathy and find meaning in life through caring for others and service to others. 6- ADVENTURE-provide youth authentic challenges and healthy risks.
